There is very little financial aid for international students who wish to study in Canada or the United States from other countries. Students from the US and Canada who wish to study in other countries can get student loans in their own country to study abroad. The same thing applies to students from other countries wishing to study in Canada or the US.

However, there are some programs that will assist international students. These include:

  • National Student Exchange. This program is a non-profit consortium of US colleges and universities. It operates like study abroad programs and allows international students to take courses at over 135 universities in the country. It includes tuition reciprocity.
  • American Institute of Foreign Study. This organization arranges for more than 40,000 international students to study at US universities throughout the year. It also provides more than 100 scholarships to international students each year to help cover the cost of the tuition.
  • American Intercultural Student Exchange. This program allows for students from all over the world to come to the US to complete high school by staying with host families all over the country.
  • Marshall Scholarships. These scholarships are highly competitive and provide the funding for 40 American students to study at universities in the UK each year.
  • George Mitchell Scholarships. This program enables American students to pursue one year of postgraduate studies in Ireland.

In Canada, the National Research Council awards scholarships so that US and international students can study for graduate degrees in Canadian universities. Getting financial aid for international students is very difficult because only a small number of schools and universities in Canada and the US offer fellowships and bursaries to students from other countries. Most students receive loans from their home countries to study abroad and the tuition fees for international students are usually higher than for those from the country.

Canadian universities that have been accredited by the US Department of Education do qualify for the same financial aid as you would receive for studying within the US. The same thing applies for Canadians wishing to study in the US. For example, chiropractic colleges in the US regularly have Canadian students with financial aid from the Canadian government.
