All colleges and universities offer scholarships to new students as well as for students already enrolled. In addition, there are over 130 federal scholarship programs to help students pay for their college education. Scholarships are rewards for obtaining high marks in high school or college or for being an outstanding athlete. You don’t have to pay back scholarships, so they are different from student loans. Getting a scholarship does cut down on the amount of federal student aid that you receive, but this is a good thing because it decreases the debt you have once you graduate. The athletic departments of most universities scout out potential athletes and recruit them to the college by offering a scholarship that will pay all the costs of tuition and books. They do this so that they can get the top athletes in a specific sport that may help the college team win the championship game at the end of the season.
