All colleges and universities offer scholarships to new students as well as for students already enrolled. In addition, there are over 130 federal scholarship programs to help students pay for their college education. Scholarships are rewards for obtaining high marks in high school or college or for being an outstanding athlete. You don’t have to pay back scholarships, so they are different from student loans. There are scholarships available for international students and many companies offer them to children of employees that want to go on to pursue secondary education.
To find out what scholarships are available from the college or university you plan to attend, you just have to contact the Registrar’s Office for a comprehensive list. You do have to submit a separate application for each one and with some of them you have to write an essay in addition to the marks you have in your high school or college courses.
Financial aid is generally not taken into consideration when you apply for a scholarship. This is because the funds are an award for high academic achievement. Most people have the idea that you have to have really high marks in order to qualify for this type of award, but in many cases not a lot of people know about them and therefore do not apply. With government scholarships, all students get equal opportunity and some of these are based on the grade achieved in a special exam.
Getting a scholarship does cut down on the amount of federal student aid that you receive, but this is a good thing because it decreases the debt you have once you graduate. There are many scholarship programs that will pay the tuition for your full college education as long as you maintain an A average throughout the program.
The athletic departments of most universities scout out potential athletes and recruit them to the college by offering a scholarship that will pay all the costs of tuition and books. They do this so that they can get the top athletes in a specific sport that may help the college team win the championship game at the end of the season.
